A Stop on the Alpine Road

The Sportalm in Bayrischzell

Alex has run the Sportalm since 2011 with Berlin bluntness and good food, a real stop on the Alpine Road.

The moment you walk in and hear Alex for the first time, you know it right away: Berlin bluntness, direct, business-savvy, a passionate host. That exact mix takes many guests by surprise. It has worked since 2011, and in that time a place many people simply drove past has become a real stop on the Alpine Road.

We often pick up food here for the whole family; we sit down to eat more for special occasions. The menu has burgers, tarte flambée, classics like schnitzel and currywurst, and alongside them higher-end meat dishes you don't think of every day. Then there is the soft-serve ice cream, one of Alex's own specialties, in every season of the year. What ties it all together: good quality.

Alex, a Berliner running the restaurant, bistro and bar

Alex took over the Sportalm in 2011. Before that, for many the place was more of a spot you drove past. Today it is a fixture: in summer for bikers coming in off the B307, in winter for cross-country and winter-sports fans from the Sudelfeld, and all year round for locals and day-trippers.

He is direct in how he deals with people and says what he thinks. Asked once how much longer he would keep doing this, he replied dryly: "Until I drop." Over the years he has rebuilt the place bit by bit, turning the once rather sterile bistro into a nice spot.

Broad, honest, no frills

The menu: burgers, tarte flambée, pasta, salads, schnitzel, currywurst, roast chicken, roast pork. Plus a solid drinks list. And alongside it a few clearly higher-priced meat dishes, beef fillet, boeuf stroganoff, onion rump steak, for the days when you go out to eat properly.

At our house, the Cheezy burger, schnitzel with fries for the kids, and the Berlin currywurst end up on the table most often.

If you want to take away: that works for the whole menu, not just a few take-away dishes. Grab the phone, order, pick up.

Its own specialty, a year-round magnet on the Alpine Road

What many day guests do not expect: the Sportalm is one of the best places for soft-serve ice cream in the valley. Alex built it up early as another mainstay, and on warm days you can see exactly why: hikers and bikers coming down off the road, families stopping by after the pool or the playground.

Bikers, families, locals

A relaxed meeting point with its own terrace

The Sportalm is a relaxed meeting point. If you are after a classic restaurant evening with white tablecloths and a served tasting menu, you are in the wrong place. If you want an honest menu and an open atmosphere, you are in the right one.

On summer weekends there are regularly bikers who park their machines right outside and can stay seated outdoors; the Sportalm has its own terrace. Families do not stand out here, because it is laid-back anyway, and if the kids get a bit loud, no one gives you a look. Larger tables can easily be put together, which makes the Sportalm one of the few places in town where you can come in with eight or ten people too.

When the others are closed, there is still something going on here

The Sportalm has no closing days and is open daily until 11 pm, with the kitchen serving hot food until 9 pm.

On top of that: the Sportalm is a Sky and DAZN sports bar. Bundesliga, Champions League, Formula 1, the big matches and broadcasts run here. If you want to watch a match live, you know where to go, and it is the only place in the valley that does it this consistently.

Right on the Alpine Road

The Sportalm sits on the German Alpine Road, right on the B307 between Bayrischzell and the Sudelfeld. There is parking right outside, which is one of the practical upsides especially for bikers and day-trippers. Free Wi-Fi is there too.

The Frühling filming locations in Bayrischzell are just a few minutes from the restaurant. If you are staying in the valley, you will find the places to stay on the accommodations page. If you are looking for other places to eat, take a look at the Where to Eat and Drink page.

Bookings and orders go through Alex by phone, not through an app or a booking portal. That is old-school, and that is exactly why it works so well.
